Abstract

I will present a method for writing which I developed in the 30 years I commented on my students' writing. I believe that with a minimum of linguistic knowledge and a good strategy, everybody can improve their own scientific writing and thereby also improve their analytical thinking about their own work. The argumentation strategy underlying English scientific writing is quite simple and narrow. I will present a step-by-step method to help you to write more convincing papers or theses. The method doesn't differ much if you are a native speaker or not; similarly, it applies to long and short texts. For interested students, I will also offer one-to-one meetings troubleshooting your own current text (please reserve a spot).

Short Bio

Simone Teufel is professor for Language and Information at Cambridge University’s Department for Computer Science and Technology, where she held a post since 2001. Here core interest is discourse linguistics, including focus theory, argumentation, and pragmatics. Applications of her work are in summarisation, argumentation mining, citation indexing, automatic writing support and related areas. After obtaining a PhD from Edinburgh University's Cognitive Science Department, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in New York's Columbia University before coming to Cambridge. Between 2017 and 2024, she was special part-time professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology (now Tokyo Science), and continues to spend part of her time in Tokyo.
